AskedAskedAsked
QuestionsQuestionsQuestions
- What is Highscore?
Highscore is the world's most comprehensive cloud gaming platform.
With Highscore, you can choose to what to stream from a collection of over 100,000 titles, and play on almost any device you own.
Chrome, Brave, Safari, Edge, iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, Android TV, and more are all supported.
We do lots of optimization and use ultra-high-end hardware; in most cases, games run better on Highscore than they do locally. With Highscore, you can run your favorite games at up to 4k + 120 FPS*, no sweat. You can do this for hours - and it won't even kill your battery.
*When released, Highscore's Pro plan will support streaming at up to 4k + 120 FPS (240 FPS for select games). Our Pro plan will be available after launch, exact date TBD.
- What games will be available on Highscore?
Highscore is starting with a BYOG (”bring-your-own-games”) model. That is, we let you stream pretty much any Steam game you own the license to through Steam, Epic, GoG, etc.
We're starting with full Steam support, with Epic, GoG, etc. soon to follow. You can expect that ~100,000 titles will be available to stream at launch, with many more to come.
- Do I need to download anything to use Highscore?
Not at all! You can use Highscore directly in your browser. All major browsers (Chrome, Brave, Safari, Edge, Arc, etc.) are supported.
That said, there are some performance benefits (latency, stream stability, bandwidth optimizations, etc.) to using the native Highscore apps, so if you want to maximize your Highscore streaming experience, we recommend downloading the relevant Highscore app for your device.
- Do I need a subscription to use Highscore?
No subscription is required! You have the option to use Highscore completely for free. There are some limits on free user sessions: they're capped at an hour, you'll only be able to stream at standard resolution, and depending on the current level of demand, you might have to wait a bit.
If you choose to upgrade your Highscore account, you'll have two options: Premium and Pro*.
With Premium, you'll have lower wait times, be able to stream at up to 1080p + 60 FPS, and play for up to 6 hours in a single session.
With Pro, you'll have very low / no wait time, be able to stream at up to 4k + 120 FPS (for select games, 240 FPS), and play for up to 8 hours in a single session.
*Highscore's Premium plan will be available at launch. The Pro plan will be available after launch, exact date TBD.
- What devices can I use with Highscore?
You can use Highscore with almost any device you own.
All major browsers (Chrome, Brave, Safari, Edge, Arc, etc.), laptops + desktops (Windows, Mac, Linux), tablets + smartphones (iPhone, iPad, Android), Chromebooks, and Smart TVs (Android TV) are all supported.
In the future, we'll be exploring support for additional devices. If there's one you really want, ping the team on Discord & let us know!
- Are there any minimum requirements to use Highscore?
In terms of hardware requirements they're pretty minimal. Most devices (even old phones, laptops, desktops, Chromebooks, etc.) should work.
For an optimal streaming experience, we recommend the following:
Internet Connectivity
- For 720p + 60 FPS → at least 10 Mbps.
- For 1080p + 60 FPS → at least 25 Mbps.
- For 1440p + 120 FPS → at least 35 Mbps.
- For 2160p + 60 FPS → at least 45 Mbps.
Monitor / Screen
- For 60 FPS → at least 60 Hz.
- For 120 FPS → at least 120 Hz.
- For 240 FPS → at least 240 Hz.
Other / Misc.
- 5 GHz wireless router or hardwired ethernet connection.
- 20ms or lower latency to a Highscore datacenter.
Outside of these recommended specs, Highscore may still work for you, but your experience may vary.
- What are the advantages of using Highscore?
With Highscore you can:
- play virtually any Steam game on any device.
- play games at Ultra settings, without killing your battery.
- get better-than-local performance with up to 4k + 120 FPS (up to 240 FPS for select games)*.
- start playing on one device, then continue on another with Highscore's “suspend + resume” feature.
- keep using the same save-file across all your devices.
- save money; compared to purchasing a gaming PC (or Xbox / PS5 + Online Services), Highscore is dramatically less expensive.
- stop worrying about installs, updates, and storage space; games on Highscore are always up-to-date, and you don't have to wait for games to install or update; you also can't run out of hard-drive space on Highscore.
- stop worrying about keeping up with the latest hardware; Highscore ensures you always have access to the latest, best equipment.
- play local co-op games with friends, over the Internet.
- play online with all your friends, regardless what device they have.
- bring your entire Steam gaming library with you, wherever you go.
*When released, Highscore's Pro plan will support streaming at up to 4k + 120 FPS (240 FPS for select games). Our Pro plan will be available after launch, exact date TBD.
- How will save-states work on Highscore?
On Highscore, save-states ‘just work'.
If you're playing a game you own via Steam, Epic, etc., your save state will still use that platform's cloud-save system.
If you're playing a game that uses local saves, Highscore will automatically synchronize those saves for you across any Highscore session.
- Will Highscore support 4k streaming?
Yes! Highscore's Pro plan will support streaming at up to 4k + 120 FPS (240 FPS for select games). Our Pro plan will be available after launch, exact date TBD.
- What GPUs does Highscore use?
It depends what game you're playing! Highscore does a lot of work to optimize performance for individual games & ensure a consistent streaming experience.
If you're playing a very demanding game, you'll be using a brand-new, ultra-high-end graphics card. If you're playing a game made in the 90's, you'll be using a graphics card more appropriately suited to that game's requirements.
- Will I be able to play on Highscore with my friends?
Yes! How this works depends a bit on what game you're playing / how you want to play with friends.
If you're playing a game you own through Steam, Epic, etc. that uses multiplayer matchmaking, you'll need to use those platforms' friend systems.
For Highscore's 'virtual-couch' (local co-op over the Internet) feature*, you can easily play with pretty much anyone - you just have to send them a link!
*The virtual-couch feature will be available shortly after launch.
- How does Highscore work?
Magic! ✨ Just kidding.
Highscore essentially runs what amounts to a bunch of high-end gaming rigs in a datacenter close to you!
Highscore operates with a BYOG (bring-your-own-games) model. That is, we allow you to stream games that you own a license to on other PC-gaming platforms like Steam, Epic, GoG, etc. on any device.
You might have seen an ‘Install & Play' button on other cloud gaming services. Highscore works in much the same way. We don't keep extra copies of games on our servers; the very first time you play a game, we check that you have the right license, then we create a ‘snapshot' of the game for you and connect it to one of our rigs. Every subsequent time you want to play the game, we re-connect you to that same snapshot.
We do use a little magic to make this seamless, fast, and fun. :)
- Who are you, anyway?
The team behind Highscore is a small, but dedicated group of hardcore gamers & software engineers based in San Francisco, California.
We're still early stage, but we have the backing of some of the best VC's + angels in Silicon Valley.
If you want to meet the team, hop into our Discord - we're usually pretty active!
- How much will Highscore cost?
Highscore has three tiers of usage. We're still figuring out exact pricing for our paid plans.
Free | Launching Later
With our basic Free tier, you can play any Steam game on Highscore at standard resolution (720p + 60 FPS). Sessions are capped at an hour, and depending on current demand, you might have to wait a bit for a rig to become available.
Premium | Launching Soon
Our Premium plan will likely cost somewhere in the ballpark of $15-$20 per month.
With Premium, you'll have lower wait times, be able to stream at up to 1080p + 60 FPS, and play for up to 6 hours in a single session.
Pro | Launching Later
Our Pro plan will likely cost somewhere in the ballpark of $25-$40 per month.
With Pro, you'll have very low / no wait time, be able to stream at up to 4k + 120 FPS (for select games, 240 FPS), and play for up to 8 hours in a single session.
- Will I need to re-buy my Steam games on Highscore?
No need to buy them again! Highscore operates on a BYOG (bring-your-own-games) basis.
We let you stream any game you already own a license to on Steam (or Epic, GoG, etc.). No need to purchase them again!
- Do I need a controller, or can I use keyboard & mouse?
Mouse & keyboard (Bluetooth, USB, built-in), as well as most Bluetooth + wired controllers (including PS4, PS5, Xbox, 8BitDo, Steel Series, Razer, etc.) are fully supported on Highscore.
Some additional drivers and / or software updates may be required, depending what controller you're trying to use.
- When (and where) is Highscore launching?
We're still evaluating options, and looking to demand on our waitlist for guidance! If you want Highscore in your region, be sure to sign up for our waitlist and refer your friends.
It's likely that for our first batch of servers (available to top 500 people in line on the waitlist), we'll be launching in California.
- I already have an Xbox (or PS5), why would I want Highscore?
Vs. Xbox + PS5, Highscore offers many benefits:
- Larger selection → you can stream a PC gaming library of over 100,000 titles.
- Better performance → at this point, PS5 runs on chips that are 5 years old. If you always want the best performance possible, Highscore is the best option.
- Compatibility → you can only really run console games on a console; with Highscore, you can play on virtually any device you own.
- Cross-play → with Highscore, you never have to worry about whether or not you can play with friends / compatibility issues. Co-op with Highscore's virtual couch is as easy as sharing a link.
- Cross-saves → if you want to keep playing from the same save file on the go, with Highscore you can. You can even ‘suspend + resume' games & keep playing from the same point on a different device!
- Storage → games get bigger every year. With Highscore, you can't run out of storage space.
- Installs & Updates → with Highscore, you never have to wait for your games to install or update; they're always up-to-date.
- Virtual Couch → Highscore lets you play local co-op with friends over the Internet, just by sharing a link!
- Suspend + Resume → Highscore also lets you pause & continue games across sessions & devices.
If you're considering purchasing an Xbox or PS5, you might also want to consider:
- Less expensive → when factoring in the price of Online Services for Xbox / PlayStation, Highscore is dramatically more affordable.
- No hardware upgrades → with Highscore, you never have to worry about hardware lifecycles again. With Highscore, your rig is never obsolete.
- Backwards compatibility → with Highscore, you never have to worry if a game backwards-compatible / incompatible with the next generation of hardware.
- How is Highscore different than Parsec or Moonlight?
Vs. Parsec + Moonlight (and similar tools), Highscore offers many advantages:
- No gaming PC → you don't actually have to own a gaming PC already (and keep it up & running) to use Highscore. Chances are, unless you have the absolute latest, highest-end hardware, Highscore runs better too.
- Storage → You can't run out of hard-drive space on Highscore. What you play isn't limited by your storage.
- Portability → Highscore works when you leave your house. Parsec / Moonlight / etc. work fairly well at home, but the minute you step out the door, performance suffers. Not so with Highscore.
- Compatibility → Highscore offers compatibility with a wider range of devices than Parsec, and a much wider range of devices than Moonlight.
- No hardware upgrades → with Highscore, you never have to worry about hardware lifecycles again. With Highscore, your rig is never obsolete.
- Virtual Couch → Highscore lets you play local co-op with friends over the Internet, just by sharing a link!
- Suspend + Resume → Highscore also lets you pause & continue games across sessions & devices.
- How is Highscore different than Shadow PC?
Vs. Shadow PC (and similar services), Highscore offers many advantages:
- Storage → You can't run out of hard-drive space on Highscore. What you play isn't limited by your storage.
- Portability → Shadow PC gives you a single remote desktop, in a single location. When you travel, Shadow PC doesn't move with you, the performance just suffers. Highscore moves with you, and always ensures you're connected to the closest, best datacenter given your current location.
- Installs & Updates → with Highscore, you never have to wait for your games to install or update; they're always up-to-date.
- Interface → Shadow PC gives you a remote desktop, with no UI optimization. While Highscore offers a similar amount of flexibility, we've substantially streamlined the UI to ensure a much better user-experience for gaming.
- Virtual Couch → Highscore lets you play local co-op with friends over the Internet, just by sharing a link!
- Suspend + Resume → Highscore also lets you pause & continue games across sessions & devices.
- How is Highscore different than GeForce Now?
Vs. GeForce Now, Highscore offers many advantages:
- Larger selection → while with GFN you can only stream ~1.5k titles, with Highscore you can stream over 100,000 titles.
- Compatibility → Highscore offers compatibility with a wider range of devices than GFN (including Linux, and browsers like Safari, Brave, and Arc).
- Flexibility → Highscore allows users & developers to create and upload their own ‘snapshots' for approval; Highscore is much less restrictive in what you can run. Want to upload a snapshot with a modded version of a game, or a 3D-modeling tool? We got you.
- Virtual Couch → Highscore lets you play local co-op with friends over the Internet, just by sharing a link!
- Suspend + Resume → Highscore also lets you pause & continue games across sessions & devices.
- How is Highscore different than Stadia?
Other than still existing, vs. Stadia, Highscore offers many advantages:
- Larger selection → with Stadia, you could only stream ~300 titles at peak; with Highscore you can stream over 100,000 titles.
- Compatibility → Highscore offers compatibility with a much wider range of devices than Stadia (including Mac, Windows, Linux, and browsers like Safari, Brave, and Arc).
- BYOG → With Stadia, you had to purchase (or re-purchase) all your games on the service; with Highscore you can bring-your-own-games and play any title you already own the license to on Steam, Epic, GoG, etc.
- Virtual Couch → Highscore lets you play local co-op with friends over the Internet, just by sharing a link!
- Suspend + Resume → Highscore also lets you pause & continue games across sessions & devices.
- Is any of this subject to change?
Highscore is currently under active development. While the vast majority of the above is locked-in, certain aspects of the service (pricing, bandwidth requirements, etc.) may change or be unavailable at launch. Be sure to stay tuned for updates!
